DiscoverEU gives eighteen year olds, resident in the European Union or in a third country partner country of the Erasmus programme, the opportunity to enjoy a short-term experience, individually or in a group, travelling across Europe. Travel is by train, with exceptions for people living on islands or in remote areas. All young people who meet the requirements will be eligible, in the year they turn 18, for a DiscoverEU voucher in one of two calls each year, one in spring (March) and one in autumn (October). Applications must be submitted via the European Youth Portal, using a specific form and by the dates specified in each call. Applications can be submitted individually or in groups. For groups (maximum 5 persons), only one application is required, although all members must meet the established requirements. In addition to providing their personal details, applicants will have to answer five multiple choice questions plus a supporting question. Applications will be ranked according to the accuracy of the answers. Successful applicants will receive an email notification and their travel voucher together with a European Youth Card which will entitle them to multiple discounts on cultural visits, sports activities, local transport, accommodation or food. Each travel voucher shall be for a named individual and non-transferable. As a general rule, successful applicants will be able to choose between the following two travel options: Flexible travel pass: allows you to travel by train for seven days within a maximum total period of one month, and you can take as many trains as you need each day. It includes trains from all EU Member States and third countries associated to the Erasmus+ programme.Fixed travel voucher: It allows you to visit a total of two countries for a maximum period of one month (not including your country of departure or countries crossed). Successful applicants shall communicate to the contractor the desired travel itinerary with fixed days and times and predefined destinations. Travel dates cannot be changed once the voucher has been issued. People with health problems or disabilities will be able to receive assistance and support. In order to support young participants in their experience of travelling in Europe and to facilitate their learning, national agencies will organise different activities within the DiscoverEU training cycle.
