What is the European Solidarity Corps?

The European Solidarity Corps (ESC) is a European Union initiative that provides opportunities for young people, aged 18-30, to carry out voluntary service or participate in projects in the solidarity sector, in their own country, in another EU country or outside the EU. Under the motto "Unity is strength", the programme aims to respond to social and humanitarian challenges, build a more inclusive society and provide an inspiring and empowering experience for young people.

In the framework of the 2021-2027 period, the ESC supports the EU's overall priorities and pays particular attention to promoting inclusion and diversity, sustainability and environmental care, supporting the digital transition and improving the participation of young people in society.

Organisations play a key role in the functioning of the European Solidarity Corps as they are responsible for applying for funding to carry out volunteer projects. These must have the Quality Label, a precondition that guarantees the general conditions necessary to participate in the programme.

Young people wishing to participate in ESC projects must first register on the European Solidarity Corps Portal. They can do so from the age of 17, but they will have to wait until they turn 18 to participate in a project.

Solidarity projects can be submitted as an informal group of at least five people.

Projects supported by the European Solidarity Corps may include:

  • Volunteer projects
  • Solidarity projects

The ESC also envisages a specific humanitarian aid voluntary service with the aim of promoting solidarity between EU member states and third countries that are vulnerable or affected by disasters and in need of basic aid and resources.
